Common Mistakes & How to Fix
❌ “Yes, I like it.”
✅ “Absolutely, it’s my favourite way to relax because…”
❌ Robotic templates
✅ Use personal stories & genuine examples
Add reason, example or contrast: “...mainly because… for instance…”
Pronunciation secret: Stress keywords and use intonation to show enthusiasm. Part 1 is your chance to impress with fluency from the start.
PPF Method (Past-Present-Future): “I used to play football as a kid (past), nowadays I prefer swimming (present), and I hope to try surfing next summer (future).” Perfect for extension!
✔️ Inversion (for emphasis)
“Not only do I enjoy reading, but I also attend book clubs regularly.”
✔️ Conditional structures
“If I had more free time, I would definitely take up pottery.”
✔️ Cleft sentences
“What I love most about my city is the vibrant street art scene.”
✔️ Present perfect for experiences
“I’ve been volunteering for two years, and it’s truly rewarding.”
🎯 Incorporating these structures once or twice per topic showcases grammatical range and accuracy — essential for moving towards band 8. Combine them with topic-specific lexis (e.g. “thrive on,” “an avid fan of”) for a premium performance.
5-Minute Daily Drills
✔️ Record yourself answering 3 random Part 1 questions — listen for hesitations.
✔️ Shadow native speakers (BBC / IELTS podcasts) for 5 minutes to improve rhythm.
✔️ Use 'word banks' per topic: list collocations & idioms and force them into answers.
✔️ Practice under timed conditions: 15 seconds thinking time, 20-second answer.
✔️ Get feedback from AI or speaking partners; focus on one grammar point each session.
Exam Mindset: Confidence & Flow
Start strong: Smile, make eye contact, and use a friendly tone. If you make a minor error, correct yourself naturally: “I mean...”, “Actually, what I meant was...”
Don’t memorise: Learn flexible frameworks (e.g. opinion → reason → example). Part 1 is about spontaneous, conversational English, not robotic answers.
“The difference between a band 6 and band 9 in Part 1 is often the variety of vocabulary and the ability to extend without prompting.” — Official IELTS Examiner insight.
Examiner: “Let’s talk about where you live. Do you live in a house or an apartment?”
Candidate (Band 9): “Currently, I’m living in a cozy apartment in the heart of Barcelona. It’s a modern flat with plenty of natural light, which I adore. However, I grew up in a traditional house near the coast, so I appreciate both styles for different reasons.”
Examiner: “What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?”
Candidate: “I’m quite eclectic when it comes to music, but I have a soft spot for indie folk and jazz. Artists like Bon Iver and Norah Jones create such a soothing atmosphere. I often listen while cooking or on my commute — it’s my way of escaping the daily hustle.”
Examiner: “Do you think it’s important to have hobbies?”
Candidate: “Without a doubt. Hobbies are essential for mental well-being and work-life balance. They offer a creative outlet and reduce stress. For instance, since I took up gardening, I’ve felt more grounded and patient in everyday life.”
