14 question types | Time management tactics | Skimming & scanning | Common trapsWhy is IELTS Reading so challenging? Not because the texts are too hard – but because you have only 60 minutes for 40 questions across three long passages. The key is strategy: knowing which question types to attack first, how to skim and scan effectively, and how to manage the clock. This hub gives you all the tactical tools.
✅ How to use: Study one question type at a time. Practice with official Cambridge tests. Apply the time allocation rules during every mock. Track your errors by question type.

| 26-29 | 6.5 | Modest | Modest |
Multiple Choice
- Read the question stem first, not all options. Underline keywords.
- Eliminate wrong answers: usually 2 are clearly wrong, 1 is a distractor.
- Look for synonyms: the correct answer paraphrases the text.
True / False / Not Given
- True: the text says exactly this, possibly paraphrased.
- False: the text contradicts the statement.
- Not Given: the information is missing entirely – don't assume!
Matching Headings
- Read the headings list first. Underline keywords in each.
- Focus on topic sentences (first 1-2 sentences of each paragraph).
- Cross out used headings to narrow choices.
Sentence Completion
- Read the sentence before the gap. Predict the word type (noun, verb, number).
- Word order matters: the answer will be in the same order as the text.
- Watch word limits: "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS".
Matching Information
- Scan for specific details (names, dates, numbers).
- Don't read every word – locate keywords.
Short Answer Questions
- Answers are usually 1-3 words from the text.
- Questions follow passage order.
- Copy spelling exactly.
Other High-Frequency Types
- Matching sentence endings: Grammar and logic. Match the beginning to the correct ending by checking coherence.
- Diagram/flowchart completion: Follow the sequence. Locate the stage in the text.
- Summary completion (with/without word bank): Check grammar – the word must fit the sentence structure.
- Choosing a title: Look for the main idea of the whole passage, not a detail.
Academic vs General Training
- Academic: 3 long factual/analytical texts – often from journals, magazines, books.
- General Training: Sections include notices, advertisements, company policies, and longer prose.
- Tactic for both: Skim titles and subtitles. Spend 20 minutes per passage. Do easy questions first.
Skimming & Scanning
- Skim first (1-2 minutes per passage): read title, subtitles, first sentence of each paragraph. You should understand the main topic and structure.
- Scan for keywords: proper nouns, dates, numbers, capitalised words are your anchors.
- Don't read every word. You don't have time. Read only what helps you answer.
Time Management System
- 20-20-20 rule: 20 minutes per passage. After 22 minutes, move on – you can return if time remains.
- Easy questions first: sentence completion, multiple choice, short answer → quick points.
- Save the hardest for last: T/F/NG and matching headings take longer.
- Guess every blank: No penalty for wrong answers. Pick consistently (e.g., all 'True').
Mistake 1: Reading the whole passage first
- Fix: Skim, then go to questions. Use questions to guide your reading.
Mistake 2: Spending too long on one question
- Fix: 1 minute per question max. Mark, skip, return.
Mistake 3: Confusing 'False' with 'Not Given'
- Fix: 'False' = text contradicts. 'Not Given' = text doesn't mention it at all.
Mistake 4: Ignoring word limits
- Fix: Circle "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS". Count your words before writing.
Mistake 5: Not using synonyms
- Fix: Underline keywords in the question, then scan for paraphrases, not exact matches.
Mistake 6: Transfer errors (paper test)
- Fix: Check spelling and capitalisation during transfer. Use all caps to avoid case errors.
🔥 Emergency Reading Strategy Card (Memorise This)
1. Skim (2 min) – title, subtitles, first sentences.
2. Scan – find keywords from questions.
3. Easy questions first – sentence completion, multiple choice.
4. 20 min per passage – move on after 22 min.
5. Guess all blanks – no penalty.
T/F/NG hack:
✔ True = same idea
✘ False = opposite idea
❓ Not Given = not mentioned
Matching headings: focus on topic sentences.
Word limits: circle them immediately.
