IELTS Process Diagrams Masterclass
Complete guide to describing manufacturing processes, life cycles, and natural sequences for Writing Task 1.
Process Diagrams in IELTS Writing Task 1
You will see a series of stages showing how something is made, how a system works, or how a living thing develops. Use the passive voice and sequencing language to describe the flow. No opinion – just factual description.
Middle: then, next, after that, following this, subsequently, once this has been done, at the same time, simultaneously
End: finally, lastly, the final stage is, the process ends with, ultimately
Movement: is transported, is conveyed, is transferred, flows, passes through
Collection: is collected, is packaged, is stored, is delivered
Active: Workers crush the limestone.
Passive (for processes): The limestone is crushed.
"The coffee beans are roasted at 200°C."
Natural processes / life cycles: Present simple (active/passive mix)
"The egg hatches, and a larva emerges."
Paraphrase the question.
State the number of stages and the start/end points.
Describe steps 1-4 with sequencing language.
Complete the process description.
Overall, cement production is a multi-stage linear process that begins with crushing raw materials and ends with bagging the finished product. Concrete production, by contrast, is a simpler mixing process.
First, limestone and clay are crushed into a fine powder using a crusher. This powder then passes through a rotating cylindrical heater where intense heat is applied. During this stage, the material undergoes a chemical transformation and emerges as small, hard balls called clinker. The clinker is then ground into a fine powder using a grinding machine, and a small amount of gypsum is added to regulate setting time. Finally, the resulting cement is packaged into bags.
In the concrete production stage, four ingredients are combined in a concrete mixer: 15% cement, 10% water, 25% sand, and 50% gravel (small stones). These materials are rotated together to form concrete, which is then used for building.
Overall, the life cycle consists of seven distinct stages, from reproduction to the development of adult frogs. It begins when frogs mate in water and ends when mature frogs reproduce, completing the cycle.
First, adult frogs mate in water, and the female lays a mass of eggs called frogspawn. After approximately 10 days, the eggs hatch, and tiny tadpoles emerge. These tadpoles breathe using gills and feed on algae. Subsequently, they develop hind legs, followed by front legs. At this stage, the tadpoles begin to develop lungs and start coming to the water's surface to breathe air.
After several weeks, the tail begins to shrink, and the young frog (called a froglet) develops fully formed lungs. Finally, after approximately 12 weeks, the froglet transforms into a fully mature adult frog, and the cycle begins again.
"Overall, the process consists of eight stages, beginning with raw material collection and ending with distribution."
"The limestone is crushed" (not "Workers crush the limestone").
