What is Sequencing Language?

Sequencing words (first, then, after that, finally) are essential for describing processes, life cycles, and any series of events. This guide teaches you how to use them naturally for Band 7-9 Task 1 answers.

Basic Sequencing Words
Beginning the Process
  • first
    "First, the limestone is crushed."
  • firstly
"Firstly, the raw materials are collected."
  • to begin with
"To begin with, the eggs are laid."
  • initially
"Initially, the clay is mixed with water."
  • the first step is
"The first step is to crush the limestone."
  • the process begins with
"The process begins with the extraction of raw materials."
Middle Stages
  • then
    "Then, the powder is heated."
  • next
    "Next, the mixture is stirred."
  • after that
"After that, the liquid is filtered."
  • once this has been done
"Once this has been done, the material is cooled."
  • subsequently
    "Subsequently, the product is packaged."
  • following this
"Following this, the items are inspected."
  • meanwhile
"Meanwhile, the water is heated separately."
Ending the Process
  • finally
    "Finally, the cement is bagged."
  • lastly
"Lastly, the finished product is shipped."
  • the final stage is
"The final stage is quality control."
  • the process ends when
"The process ends when the bottles are sealed."
  • ultimately
"Ultimately, the concrete is ready for use."
Simultaneous Actions
  • meanwhile
"Meanwhile, the water is heated to 100°C."
  • simultaneously
    "Simultaneously, two chemical reactions occur."
  • at the same time
"At the same time, the gas is released."

"Prior to being packaged, the product is tested."
  • subsequent to + -ing
"Subsequent to heating, the mixture is cooled."
  • once + past participle
"Once crushed, the powder is sieved."
  • following + noun
"Following the crushing stage, the material is heated."
  • after which
"The limestone is crushed, after which it is ground into powder."

Band 9 Sample Answer
🏭 Cement Production Process
The diagram shows how cement is produced.

First, limestone and clay are crushed into a fine powder. Once crushed, the powder passes through a rotating heater where intense heat is applied. Following this, the material forms small hard balls called clinker. After this stage, the clinker is ground into a fine powder using a grinding machine, and a small amount of gypsum is added. Finally, the resulting cement is packaged into bags ready for distribution.
📖 Sequencing words used: First, Once crushed, Following this, After this stage, Finally.
Life Cycle Example
🐸 Life Cycle of a Frog
To begin with, adult frogs mate in water, and the female lays a mass of eggs called frogspawn. After approximately 10 days, the eggs hatch, and tiny tadpoles emerge. Next, the tadpoles develop hind legs, followed by front legs. During this stage, they begin to develop lungs and start coming to the water's surface to breathe air. After several weeks, the tail begins to shrink, and the young frog (called a froglet) develops fully formed lungs. Finally, after approximately 12 weeks, the froglet transforms into a fully mature adult frog.

Common Sequencing Mistakes
  • ❌ Using "firstly" for every step
Fix: Vary with "first, then, after that, next, finally"
  • ❌ Skipping steps
Fix: Describe every stage shown in the diagram
  • ❌ Mixing past and present tense
Fix: Use present simple for man-made processes, past for historical changes
  • ❌ Overusing "and then"
Fix: Use "subsequently, following this, after which" for variety
