Band 9 Sample Answer
🏝️ Coastal Town Development (1995 → 2020)
The maps show a coastal town's development over a 25-year period.

Overall, the town was transformed from a quiet fishing village into a modern tourist hub, with significant urbanisation replacing natural areas.

In 1995, the town featured a fish market and a wooden pier along the waterfront. Marshland covered the northern area, while a large sandy beach stretched along the eastern coast. A few residential houses were scattered near the centre, and there was a small car park behind the beach.

By 2020, the area had undergone dramatic redevelopment. The marshland was completely drained to construct a marina with dozens of boat slips, surrounded by newly built waterfront apartments. The old fish market was demolished, and a modern shopping complex was built in its place. The wooden pier was replaced by a longer concrete pier. On the eastern beachfront, a four-star hotel and a larger car park were constructed, replacing the original beach area. Additionally, the residential area was expanded with new housing developments, and a children's playground was added near the centre.

The transformation reflects a clear shift from a fishing-based economy to tourism-driven development.
📖 Key features of this Band 9 answer: Clear overview, specific details, variety of change verbs (drained, constructed, demolished, replaced, expanded), location language, passive voice used appropriately.

Common Mistakes & Fixes

❌ Mistake 2: Missing location references
Fix: Use compass directions and relative positions.
"to the north of the river", "adjacent to the car park"
❌ Mistake 3: Wrong tense
Fix: Past tense for historical changes, present for current layouts, future for planned developments.
❌ Mistake 4: Describing every minor change
Fix: Group similar changes together (e.g., "Residential areas expanded, and leisure facilities were added.")
