Creative person
Person

Describe a creative person whose work you admire.

👉 Who they are
👉 How you know about them
👉 What creative things they have done
👉 Explain why you admire them.

Band 9 Model

“I’d like to talk about the Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli. I first discovered his films as a child when I watched ‘Spirited Away’, and I was mesmerised by the imaginative worlds he creates. He has written and directed timeless animations like ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ and ‘Princess Mononoke’, blending fantasy with deep ecological and humanistic themes. What I admire most is his refusal to compromise artistic integrity for commercial gain – he draws many frames by hand, even in the digital age. His work has taught me that creativity is about authenticity and patience. Miyazaki’s films make you think, dream, and feel, which is why he remains my ultimate creative icon.”
Historical site
Place

Describe a historical place you have visited.

👉 What it is
👉 When you went there
👉 What you saw there
👉 And explain how you felt about it.

Band 9 Model

“The most awe-inspiring historical site I’ve ever visited is Petra in Jordan, an ancient city carved into rose-red cliffs. I went two years ago during spring. Walking through the narrow Siq canyon, with its towering walls, felt like stepping back in time. The Treasury, with its intricate façade, is breathtaking – but beyond that, the vast complex includes tombs, temples, and an amphitheater. What struck me most was the ingenuity of the Nabataeans, who built an advanced water system in the desert. I felt a profound sense of wonder and humility, realizing how civilisations rise and fall. Petra taught me that history is not just in books; it’s alive in stone and sand.”
Gift
Object

Describe a gift you received that meant a lot to you.

👉 What the gift was
👉 Who gave it to you
👉 When you received it
👉 Explain why it was meaningful.

Band 9 Model

“My most cherished gift is a vintage fountain pen my grandmother gave me on my graduation day. It’s a deep green marbled pen with a gold nib, and she had used it herself when she was a university student. I was incredibly touched because she knew I loved writing stories. That pen represents her belief in my dreams; she told me that ‘words written by hand carry the soul’. I still use it to draft my poems. Its sentimental value is immeasurable – it connects me to my grandmother’s legacy and reminds me that the simplest gifts can hold the deepest meaning.”
Festival
Event

Describe a traditional festival in your country.

👉 What festival it is
👉 When it is celebrated
👉 What people do during it
👉 Explain why it is important.

Band 9 Model

“Diwali, the festival of lights, is the most vibrant celebration in India. It usually falls in October or November, marking the victory of light over darkness. Families clean their homes, light oil lamps (diyas), burst firecrackers, and exchange sweets. For me, the best part is the sense of togetherness – relatives gather for feasts and prayers. This festival is culturally vital because it reinforces hope, forgiveness, and renewal. Even when I’m away from home, I light a lamp and video-call my family. Diwali is not just a holiday; it’s an emotional anchor that reminds us of our roots.”
Swimming
Activity

Describe an activity you do to keep fit.

👉 What it is
👉 How often you do it
👉 Where you do it
👉 Explain why it benefits you.

Band 9 Model

“To keep fit, I’ve taken up open-water swimming in a nearby lake. I go every weekend, early in the morning, regardless of the season. The cold water is invigorating, and it’s a full-body workout without the joint strain of running. Beyond fitness, it’s a mental reset – the silence and the feeling of weightlessness reduce my anxiety dramatically. I’ve also joined a small community of winter swimmers; we support each other. This activity has taught me discipline and resilience. It’s not just about physical health; it’s about confronting discomfort and feeling truly alive.”
Future goal
Dream

Describe a goal you would like to achieve in the future.

👉 What the goal is
👉 Why you want to achieve it
👉 What you need to do to reach it
👉 Explain how you feel about this goal.

Band 9 Model

“My long-term goal is to publish a novel that explores cross-cultural identities. I’ve always been passionate about storytelling, and I want to write a book that helps people understand the nuance of belonging to two cultures. To achieve this, I’m committed to writing 500 words daily and attending creative writing workshops. I also read literary fiction to learn from masters. This goal feels daunting yet exhilarating – it gives my life direction. Even if it takes years, the process of creating something meaningful is what truly matters to me.”
Dog
Animal

Describe a pet you have or would like to have.

👉 What animal it is
👉 What it looks like
👉 How you would take care of it
👉 Explain why you want this pet.

Band 9 Model

“I’ve always dreamed of having a Samoyed dog – a fluffy white breed known for its ‘smiling’ face. They have thick, cloud-like fur and a gentle, playful temperament. I’ve researched their needs extensively: they require daily exercise, grooming, and social interaction. I would take it on long hikes and train it with positive reinforcement. I want a Samoyed because they are incredibly affectionate and loyal; they also thrive in cold weather, which matches my love for winter. A dog would not only be a companion but also motivate me to be more active and patient.”
Advice
Advice

Describe a useful piece of advice you received.

👉 Who gave it to you
👉 What the advice was
👉 How you applied it
👉 Explain why it was useful.

Band 9 Model

“My university professor once told me: ‘Don’t wait for perfect conditions; start messy and improve along the way.’ I was procrastinating on a research project because I felt unprepared. After hearing that, I decided to write a rough draft immediately, and then iteratively revised it. That advice transformed my work ethic. Now, I apply it to all aspects of life – learning a language, starting a side business. The lesson is that action breeds clarity, and perfectionism is the enemy of progress. It’s the most liberating guidance I’ve ever received.”
Film
Media

Describe a film or book that made a strong impression on you.

👉 What it was
👉 When you experienced it
👉 What it was about
👉 Explain why it impressed you.

Band 9 Model

“The novel ‘The Kite Runner’ by Khaled Hosseini left an indelible mark on me. I read it during a flight three years ago, and I couldn’t put it down. It tells a story of friendship, betrayal, and redemption set against Afghanistan’s turbulent history. What impressed me most was the raw emotional honesty – the protagonist’s guilt and his journey to atone felt universally human. It changed my perspective on forgiveness and the complexity of family bonds. I still think about the line ‘for you, a thousand times over’. That book taught me empathy beyond borders.”
Skill
Skill

Describe a practical skill you would like to learn.

👉 What it is
👉 Why you want to learn it
👉 How you would go about learning it
👉 Explain how it might help you.

Band 9 Model

“I’m determined to learn sign language, specifically American Sign Language (ASL). I want to communicate more effectively with deaf individuals and contribute to a more inclusive society. I’ve already downloaded a learning app and plan to attend community classes twice a week. I also practice with online videos. Beyond being a practical tool, learning sign language would broaden my perspective on non-verbal communication. It could open volunteer opportunities at local deaf schools. This skill represents respect and empathy, which are values I hold dear.”
More High-Frequency Cue Cards
Meal
Food

Describe a memorable meal you had. (Where, with whom, what you ate, why memorable)

Band 9 Model

“Last year, I had an unforgettable home-cooked meal at a farmhouse in Tuscany. The host family prepared a five-course dinner with ingredients from their garden: bruschetta, homemade pasta with wild boar ragu, and tiramisu. The warmth of the family and the stunning sunset over vineyards made it magical. It wasn’t just about the food; it was the authenticity and generosity. I’ve never tasted tomatoes so sweet. That meal taught me that the best gastronomic experiences come from love, not Michelin stars.”
Proud moment
Achievement

Describe a time you felt proud of an achievement.

Band 9 Model

“I felt extremely proud when I completed a half-marathon last year despite having no prior running experience. I trained for four months, waking up at 5 a.m. three times a week. Crossing the finish line, exhausted but euphoric, was a moment of pure self-realisation. I proved to myself that consistency beats talent. That pride wasn’t about the medal; it was about the discipline I built. Now I apply that same mindset to any challenging goal.”
Website
Digital

Describe a website you often visit.

Band 9 Model

“I frequently use the ‘Atlas Obscura’ website, which features unusual and hidden wonders around the world. I discovered it two years ago while planning a trip. It curates quirky places like museums of broken relationships or underground cities. I love it because it satisfies my curiosity and inspires offbeat travel. The writing is engaging, and the community shares fascinating stories. It has turned my ordinary weekends into mini-adventures.”
Law
Society

Describe a law or regulation you would like to change.

Band 9 Model

“I’d like to see stricter penalties for plastic pollution – specifically, banning single-use plastics nationwide. Where I live, plastic bags still flood the environment. A law imposing heavy fines on manufacturers who don’t switch to compostable materials would force change. I would also advocate for a deposit-return scheme for bottles. Such a law would reduce landfill waste and protect marine life. Small steps like these have worked in Germany and South Korea. Environmental protection requires legal teeth.”
Childhood
Memory

Describe a happy memory from your childhood.

Band 9 Model

“One of my happiest childhood memories is learning to ride a bicycle with my father. I was seven, and he would run behind me, holding the seat. After many falls, I finally balanced on my own and felt the wind on my face. He cheered louder than anyone. That memory represents trust and persistence. Even now, whenever I ride a bike, I remember his patient smile. It reminds me that the best support is believing in someone before they believe in themselves.”

1-Minute Planning That Works

Use the ‘Keyword Web’ method:

  • 📌 10 seconds: Identify the topic and underline keywords.
  • 📌 25 seconds: Jot down 4-5 keywords for each bullet point (who, where, feeling).
  • 📌 15 seconds: Note a strong opening sentence and a concluding reflection.
  • 📌 10 seconds: Mentally rehearse the first few sentences.

Example notes for ‘Describe a gift’: Grandmother, graduation, fountain pen, writing dreams, sentimental → story about her using it as a student. Then expand naturally.

Avoid writing full sentences – just keywords. This keeps your delivery spontaneous.

Lexical Resource Boosters

  • Describe People charismatic, empathetic, visionary
  • Describe Places picturesque, bustling, secluded, rustic
  • Express Emotion overwhelmed, nostalgic, exhilarated, profound
  • Time Phrase looking back, ever since, as time passed
  • Contrast although, despite, on the contrary

💡 Advanced structure: Start with “I’d like to tell you about…”, use past perfect for background, add sensory details (sights, sounds, smells), and finish with a personal takeaway.

Grammar to Elevate Your Long Turn

Inversion for drama
“Not only did I see the sunset, but I also heard whales singing.”
Past continuous for setting
“The sun was setting while we were walking along the shore.”
Relative clauses
“My uncle, who is a carpenter, built the bookshelf.”

🎯 Use at least two complex grammatical structures naturally. Practice combining short sentences into longer, fluid ones.
