📋 Task 2 Question - AI Topic

Some people believe that artificial intelligence will replace most human jobs in the future. Others think that AI will create more jobs than it destroys.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

✍️ Band 9 Sample Answer

Target: 280 words | Time: 40 mins

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has sparked intense debate about its impact on employment. While some argue that AI will render most human jobs obsolete, I contend that technological progress historically creates more opportunities than it eliminates, and AI is unlikely to be an exception.

On the one hand, proponents of the job displacement view highlight AI's capacity to automate repetitive and data-intensive tasks with unprecedented efficiency. In sectors such as manufacturing, customer service, and data analysis, machine learning algorithms can now outperform human workers in terms of speed, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness. For instance, automated chatbots have already replaced thousands of customer support roles in multinational corporations, leading to significant workforce reductions. Consequently, many fear widespread technological unemployment and growing socioeconomic inequality.

On the other hand, history demonstrates that technological revolutions generate novel industries and roles that did not previously exist. The advent of the internet did not merely destroy jobs in traditional media; it created entire ecosystems around e-commerce, digital marketing, and software development. Similarly, AI is driving demand for AI ethicists, prompt engineers, data annotators, and machine learning specialists. Furthermore, AI functions best as a collaborative tool that augments human capabilities rather than replacing them entirely. In healthcare, for example, AI assists doctors in diagnosing diseases but does not replace clinical judgment or patient interaction.

In my opinion, while certain low-skilled roles will inevitably be automated, the net effect of AI will be job creation. The key lies in workforce reskilling and adaptive education systems that equip individuals with digital literacy and critical thinking skills. Governments and corporations must invest in lifelong learning programs to ensure that workers can transition into emerging roles.

In conclusion, although AI poses legitimate challenges to specific job categories, its overall impact on employment is likely to be positive. By fostering innovation and creating new professions, AI will expand the labor market rather than contract it, provided that society adapts proactively.
