IELTS Academic vs General Training: Key Differences, Test Format & Scoring Guide
Advanced techniques for each section – time-saving shortcuts, question prioritisation, and score-maximising strategies.
Use the 30 seconds before each section to preview questions. Predict answer types: is it a name? date? number? This primes your brain to listen for specific sounds.
If a speaker says "I thought it was Tuesday, but actually it's Wednesday" – the answer is Wednesday. Words like "however", "but", "actually" signal corrections.
No penalty for wrong answers. Always guess – even if you miss a question, move on. One missed question won't ruin your band; panic will.
20 minutes per passage. After 22 minutes, move on – you can return if time remains. Use a watch or on-screen timer strictly.
Attack sentence completion, multiple choice, and short answer questions first. Save T/F/NG and matching headings for last – they take more cognitive load.
Underline proper nouns, dates, numbers, and unique words in questions. Scan for these exact matches or their synonyms in the passage.
Task 2: 5 min plan → 30 min write → 5 min proofread. Task 1: 3 min plan → 15 min write → 2 min proofread.
Your second paragraph MUST summarise the main trend or biggest change. No overview = max Band 5 for Task Achievement.
Point → Explain → Example → Link. One clear example per body paragraph is better than three vague ones.
In your 1-minute prep, write 4-5 keywords only (e.g., "cousin – Bahria Town – job – loves view"). Don't waste time on full sentences.
Past → Present → Future. "I used to play football, but now I prefer swimming, and I hope to try surfing next year." Adds instant length and variety.
Replace "um" with "That's an interesting question", "Let me think", "Well actually..." – buys you thinking time without losing fluency.
Pick one tactic from each section and practice it for 3 days. Track your improvement. Small changes = big score jumps.
