Day 24: IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Describe a Person

Master the art of describing people with structure, advanced vocabulary, and natural fluency for Band 7+.

Welcome to Day 24 of the 90-Day IELTS Challenge

Today’s focus is one of the most frequent and versatile topics in IELTS Speaking: describing a person. Cue cards often ask about someone you admire, a family member, a teacher, a friend, or even a famous figure. The key to scoring Band 7+ lies in three things: a clear structure, precise and varied vocabulary, and the ability to speak fluently for nearly two minutes without hesitation.

In this guide, you’ll learn the reliable PPF framework, high-level vocabulary (including natural idioms), a Band 8 sample answer, Part 3 discussion strategies, and a practical checklist to evaluate your practice.

1. Typical Cue Card – Describe a Person You Admire

Describe a person you admire.

  • Who this person is
  • How you know them
  • What they are like (appearance / personality)
  • And explain why you admire them so much.

Tip: You have 1 minute to make notes and must speak for 1–2 minutes.

2. The PPF Framework (Past – Present – Feeling)

Use this simple yet powerful structure to organise your ideas and avoid running out of things to say:

Phase Focus Useful Starters
Introduction Name & brief context “The person I’d like to talk about is…” / “One individual who has really inspired me is…”
Past First meeting & early impressions “I first met them when…” / “What initially struck me was…” / “Back in my school days…”
Present Current qualities (appearance + personality) “Nowadays, what stands out most is…” / “In terms of personality, they are incredibly…” / “They have this remarkable ability to…”
Feeling Why you admire them + personal impact “The main reason I look up to them is…” / “They’ve shown me that…” / “Because of them, I now try to…”

3. Vocabulary & Idioms for Band 8+

Move beyond basic words like “nice” or “good”. Incorporate these naturally:

  • Charismatic – having a magnetic personality that draws people in
  • Resilient – able to recover quickly from difficulties
  • Meticulous – extremely careful and precise
  • Down-to-earth – practical, humble, and unpretentious
  • A heart of gold – exceptionally kind and generous
  • Hold someone in high esteem – to respect and admire deeply
  • The life and soul of the party – very lively and sociable

Important: Use only 1–2 idioms per answer. Forced vocabulary lowers fluency and coherence scores.

4. Band 8+ Sample Answer

“I’d like to talk about someone I truly admire—my aunt, Sarah. She’s my mother’s younger sister, and I’ve known her my entire life since she lived very close to us when I was growing up.

Physically, she has quite a striking yet approachable appearance—tall, with expressive eyes and a warm smile that immediately puts people at ease. Personality-wise, she is incredibly resilient and down-to-earth. Despite facing several personal challenges, including health issues and financial difficulties, she always maintains an optimistic outlook and never complains.

What I admire most is her generosity—she has a real heart of gold. She volunteers regularly at a local shelter and is always the first to help family or friends in need. Her strength and kindness have taught me the importance of perseverance and empathy. Because of her example, I now try to approach difficulties with more patience and a positive mindset. I hold her in the highest esteem.”

Why this scores Band 8+: Full coverage of prompts • Natural use of idioms & advanced adjectives • Excellent tense variety (past, present perfect, present) • Cohesive linking • \~1:50–2:00 when spoken at natural pace.

5. Part 3 Follow-Up Questions – Discussion Skills

Part 3 shifts to more abstract questions. Use the PEEL technique: Point → Explain → Example → Link.

  • What kinds of people do young people in your country look up to nowadays?
  • Do you think famous people make good role models? Why / why not?
  • Has the idea of a “hero” changed in recent decades?
  • Is it better to admire people we know personally or famous figures? Why?
