IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Common Questions & Sample Answers
Speaking Part 1 is your chance to impress the examiner. In this lesson, we practice everyday questions with sample answers to help you gain confidence. From work and study to hobbies and family – we cover the most common topics with model responses.
🎯 Perfect for beginners who want to build fluency and natural expression.
Part 1 lasts 4–5 minutes and focuses on you — your life, interests, and opinions. The key is to give extended answers without rambling. Below you’ll find high‑band sample answers (Band 7–9) with techniques you can steal.
Work & study
Job / major questions
Do you work or are you a student?
Sample (student): “I’m currently a third‑year university student majoring in business administration. I chose this field because I’ve always been interested in how companies operate and I eventually want to launch my own startup.” Sample (worker): “I work as a graphic designer at a creative agency. I’ve been there for about two years, and I really enjoy the mix of visual creativity and client interaction.”
Why did you choose that job / subject?
Sample: “I chose design because I’ve been drawing since childhood, and I realised that visual communication is a powerful tool. For my studies, I was drawn to the practical aspects — it’s a field with real‑world impact.” reason + background
What is your favourite part of your work/studies?
Sample: “Honestly, the collaborative projects are the best part. I love brainstorming with classmates/colleagues because different perspectives always lead to more creative solutions.”
Hobbies & free time
Leisure & interests
What do you usually do in your free time?
Sample: “I’m quite an active person, so I often go hiking on weekends if the weather’s nice. During the week, I unwind by reading mystery novels or watching documentaries – it helps me switch off from work.” active + relaxing mix
Do you prefer to spend free time alone or with others?
Sample: “It depends on my mood. After a busy week, I value some alone time to recharge. But I also love socialising – grabbing coffee with friends or playing board games. So I’d say a healthy balance of both.”
Have your hobbies changed since childhood?
Sample: “Definitely. As a kid I was into collecting stamps and trading cards, which is quite rare now. These days I’m more into digital photography and learning the guitar – I guess my interests matured.”
Tip: Don’t just list hobbies – add a short reason or feeling to extend your answer naturally.
Family & where you live
Home & family
Can you tell me about your family?
Sample: “Certainly. There are four of us: my parents, my younger sister, and me. We’re a pretty close‑knit family – we always have dinner together and share our day. My sister is still in high school, so I sometimes help her with homework.”
Do you live in a house or an apartment?
Sample: “I live in a flat on the 12th floor of a modern building in the city centre. It’s quite compact but very convenient – I have a park and metro station nearby.”
What’s your favourite room in your home?
Sample: “Definitely the living room because it has large windows with lots of sunlight. I’ve set up a little reading corner there, so it’s where I relax with a cup of tea after a long day.”
Daily routine & other favourites
What is a typical day like for you?
Sample: “I usually wake up around 7, then I go for a short run to get some energy. After a quick breakfast, I start work/study. Evenings are for cooking dinner and either meeting friends or watching a series. On weekdays I try to be in bed by 11.”
What’s your favourite type of weather?
Sample: “I absolutely love autumn weather – not too hot, not too cold, with a gentle breeze. It’s perfect for going on long walks without sweating, and the colours of the leaves are stunning.”
Do you like to watch the sky? (stars / daytime)
Sample: “Yes, I’m fascinated by the night sky. Whenever I visit my grandparents in the countryside, I stargaze – it’s incredibly peaceful and puts things into perspective.”
🔑 how to use these samples
Each answer above follows three simple rules: direct response + reason + detail/feeling. For example:
Direct: “I’m a graphic designer” – answers the question immediately.
Reason: “I chose it because I’ve always loved visual storytelling.”
Detail/feeling: “I enjoy client interaction – it challenges me.”
Mix and match, but always adapt to your real experience. Authenticity boosts fluency.
