What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English proficiency test. It evaluates your Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills for higher education and global migration purposes.
Academic vs. General Training
Choosing the right test version is critical. Here’s a quick comparison:
| Test Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | University applications or professional registration (e.g., doctors, nurses). |
| IELTS General Training | Migration, secondary education, or work experience in English-speaking countries. |
Test Format
The test consists of four modules. Listening, Reading, and Writing are usually taken on the same day. The Speaking test may be scheduled up to a week before or after.
- Listening (30 mins): 4 sections, 40 questions.
- Reading (60 mins): 3 passages, 40 questions.
- Writing (60 mins): 2 tasks (Report/Letter and Essay).
- Speaking (11–14 mins): Face-to-face interview with an examiner.
Scoring Explained
IELTS uses a 9-band scale. You receive a score for each skill and an overall band.
- Band 9: Expert User
- Band 7: Good User (common university requirement)
- Band 5: Modest User
Scores are reported in whole or half bands (e.g., 6.5 or 7.0).
