Quick Rules: When to Use Is, Am, Are

  • Am – Use only with I (first person singular).
  • Is – Use with he, she, it, names of one person/animal/thing (third person singular).
  • Are – Use with you, we, they, and plural nouns (more than one).

Examples with Am, Is, Are

Am (only with I)

I am happy.

I am a student.

I am from Pakistan.

Short form: I'm happy. (I'm = I am)

Is (he, she, it, singular names)

He is tall.

She is a teacher.
